Office of Research and Sponsored Projects (ORSP)

The Office of Research and Sponsored Projects enables and safeguards the conduct of research and other sponsored activity for the University of Michigan. It provides specialized regulatory, statutory and organizational knowledge for pre-award research administration, as well as tools and resources to support U-M researchers in applying for and managing sponsored awards and contracts. ORSP is a unit within the University of Michigan Office of Research (UMOR).

Office of Contract Administration

The Office of Contract Administration is responsible for the review and execution of contracts and grants associated with sponsored projects.

 

eResearch

The eResearch website is the University of Michigan’s centralized resource for the electronic research administration of regulatory, proposal, award, and animal management tasks.

Sponsored Programs

Sponsored Programs manages the financial post-award activities of the University of Michigan’s research enterprise and other sponsored activities to ensure compliance with applicable federal, state and local laws as well as sponsor regulations. They provide resources that assist members of the U-M community with understanding and upholding their post-award fiscal responsibilities. Sponsored Programs is a unit within University of Michigan Business & Finance.

Research Activity

The University of Michigan Office of Research, under the auspices of the Vice President for Research, supports the following research compliance programs. These programs oversee the implementation of regulatory and statutory standards for specific research activity at U-M and provide guidance, resources, training, and support to investigators and the U-M research community to ensure they meet compliance standards.  

Animal Care & Use Program

Oversees animal welfare in the conduct of research, testing, and teaching to ensure the humane treatment of all animals.

Conflicts of Interest (COI) Research Compliance Program

Oversees the institutional processes and guidelines for investigators (excluding Michigan Medicine) to report outside interests related to research activity; for the identification of conflicts of interest with research and technology transfer, and the management of those conflicts of interest.

Controlled Substances Use in Research

Oversees federal and state license, security, and reporting requirements for conducting research using a controlled substance, including animal research, human subjects research, and in vitro or analytical research.

Controlled Unclassified Information

Oversees the application of information security controls to safeguard or disseminate federal non-classified information per terms specified in federal contracts/awards.

Export Controls Program

Oversees research and/or travel with technology, technical data, etc. subject to federal controls regarding how items/materials/data are exported, shipped, transmitted, transferred or shared from the U.S. to foreign countries, persons or entities.

Human Pluripotent Stem Cell Research Oversight (HPSCRO)

Oversees ethical issues related to the derivation and research use of human embryonic stem cells and induced pluripotent stem cells.

Human Research Protections Program (HRPP)

Oversees the institutional processes and guidelines for the U-M Institutional Review Boards (IRBs) and investigators to protect the rights and welfare of human participants in research.

Institutional Autonomous Systems Committee (IASC)

Oversees research involving the use of unmanned aircraft (drones) and other autonomous (i.e., self-driving) vehicles.

Oversees research using hazardous biological materials, including recombinant DNA, synthetic nucleic acid molecules, infectious agents, biological toxins, and more.

Research Integrity Program (Research Misconduct)

Provides guidance regarding the University of Michigan’s Integrity of Scholarship and Research policy (SPG 303.03) and investigates allegations of research misconduct (i.e., fabrication, falsification, and plagiarism).

Research Safety

Applies to work performed both within traditional laboratory spaces as well as in other settings. The U-M Office of Research and the U-M Department of Environment, Health, & Safety work together with the  schools and colleges to provide research safety programs that assist faculty, staff and students in complying with federal and state regulations and in creating a safe research environment.
