Frequently Asked Questions

Have questions? Find the answers here. We are here to help you navigate resources, understand the reporting process, and learn more about the role of ethics, integrity, and compliance at the University of Michigan.

Compliance means following laws, policies, and ethical standards that guide how we work and learn at the University of Michigan. Staying compliant is how we embody and strengthen our organizational values — Independence, Integrity, Inclusion, and Transparency.

As stated in the University of Michigan’s values, integrity means “we act with honesty and take responsibility for our actions.”

Ethics at U-M means fundamentally doing the right thing by intentionally making decisions and taking actions that comply with university policies, professional standards, and the law in support of the university’s mission.

You have several options depending on the situation. These include informal conversations, mediation, or working with an appropriate Human Resources office.

When are mediation services most appropriate? Mediation is helpful when both parties are open to resolving conflict through a respectful, guided conversation. It’s best used for misunderstandings or communication issues rather than policy violations.

What kinds of concerns should I share with HR? HR can help with workplace concerns like performance issues, team dynamics, policy questions, or interpersonal conflicts that don’t involve legal or ethical violations.

What are Ombuds? U-M Ombuds offer a confidential, neutral space to talk through academic or workplace concerns without starting a formal process. They help you explore your options and next steps.

For policy-related questions, please email the Policy and Accountability team at spgonline@umich.edu.

You can explore university-wide policies in the U-M Standard Practice Guide (SPG), which offers searchable access by topic, audience, or department. See the guide here.

For questions related to research compliance, reach out to the Office of the Vice President for Research (OVPR). Find their contact information here.

If something feels off or could involve fraud, misuse of resources, safety violations, or ethical concerns, it’s worth reporting. Common issues include financial misconduct, conflicts of interest, data privacy concerns, or retaliation. Start the reporting process here.

No — the compliance hotline serves all U-M campuses, including Dearborn, Flint, and Michigan Medicine.

You’ll receive a case number and secure key to follow up. Your concern will be reviewed, directed to the appropriate office, and you may be contacted if more information is needed.

Yes. You can report anonymously through the Compliance Hotline, and your identity will be protected if you choose not to share it. However, you should keep in mind that certain types of reports may be difficult for the university to pursue if you choose to remain anonymous.

Everyone at U-M plays a role in upholding compliance — but the EICO helps guide, support, and coordinate efforts across the university.

The Ethics, Integrity, & Compliance Office helps prevent misconduct, supports ethical decision-making, and responds to concerns across campus through coordination, education, and investigation. Our goal is to be Leaders and Best, upholding and improving the university culture that we all know and love.

Required training depends on your role. You can check platforms like My LINC or Cornerstone Learning for assignments related to compliance, ethics, or safety.

That’s okay — if you’re unsure, use the Compliance Hotline to report or get guidance. It’s available 24/7 and supports all U-M campuses and Michigan Medicine.
